Much of Markham drains to the Rouge and Don rivers. TRCA regulates work in or near valleys, floodplains and wetlands, including additions, new homes and garages, so check if your lot is near a creek or valley.
Markham Village and Thornhill are designated Heritage Conservation Districts, so exterior work there needs a heritage permit first.
Markham supports secondary suites, and coach houses (a unit above a garage) are allowed in parts of the city. A building permit and registration with the Fire Department are required.
